Completed in 1550, this historical (and apparently haunted) country pub boasts wood panelling, oak beams, roaring fires and intriguing nooks and crannies.
The bar/restaurant offers award-winning beers including Badger First Gold. The ale changes every three months, with this summer’s selection being the organic Stinger, created with the help of TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
The menu – devised by food consultant Alec Howard – features “proper food”, including a selection of English classics from around £7, such as ham and eggs, and the Famous Sussex Smokey (white and smoked fish in a cheese sauce).
Prices rise to £13.95 for the rump steak, and desserts include sticky toffee pudding for £4.50.
Sandwiches are also available.
