HOTEL DU VIN AND BISTRO

With an award-winning wine list and an impressive reputation for its a la carte menu, this stylish restaurant and bistro has cornered the lunch market, too.

Its inexpensive menu de jour option offers two courses and a glass of wine for £15.50, while the a la carte menu is available at lunchtimes and during the evenings, offering starters from £6.75 and mains, which range from £15.50 to £25 for occasional specials, such as lobster.

The menu alters on a daily basis, depending on the seasonal availability of the produce but typical starters include seared pigeon with roasted pine nuts, or Serrano ham and figs.

For the main course, there’s a range of simple classics, which might include locally smoked salmon and steak tartare, or more exotic dishes, such as confit of duck leg, or chargrilled calves liver.

A range of sides are on offer, such as minted Jersey Royals and cucumber and mint salad, along with home-made sorbet and ice cream desserts. Various non-alcoholic beverages are available, should you decide to pass on the Hotel Du Vin speciality. Vegetarians are also catered for adequately with starters including warm English asparagus with Hollandaise and mains such as linguine with courgette, slow roast tomatoes and Parmesan.

With around 600 wines on its current drinks list – along with champagnes, ports and whiskeys – choosing your tipple might appear to be a daunting prospect. But guided choice is the order of the day here, with a weekly sommelier’s selection of red and white wines available by the glass, starting at £4 each.

Hotel Du Vin also hosts a calendar of specialist winetasting events each year.
