THE HANBURY CLUB

Amanda Blanch and Chris Edwardes of Blanch House have restored this venue to its former glory.

The Grade II-listed building, originally built in the 18th century as a mausoleum for the Sassoon family, has been called “a jewel in Kemp Town’s crown”.

Its central feature is a magnificent glass dome featuring voluptuous painted figures, and in the ballroom there are luxurious black suede leather banquettes, smart pin-striped wallpaper, decorative mirrors and an extravagant black marble bar, glittering with bottles of premium sprits and ten different champagnes, sold by the glass.

There is lager and bitter on tap, bottled beers and a selection of award-winning cocktails. Diners can also choose from an accessible, brasserie-style bar food menu midweek and two or three-course supper club menus, priced £20 and £25 respectively, at the weekend from 7pm.

All this meets Blanch House standards but with live entertainment and a touch of Thirties glamour.

Starters are priced from £5 and include such dishes as Thai fishcakes with Hanbury chilli jam; assiette of cured fish with beetroot, citrus and dill; chargrilled polenta served with beetroot salsa and balsamic roasted onion; and flash-fried marinated beef salad.

Main courses – a range of meat and fish dishes – start from £10 and include slowroasted pork belly served with ginger and caramelised apple mash; spice crusted salmon with greens and sesame soy glaze; pan-fried mackerel served with sautéed potatoes, leek fondant and mustard sauce; and duo of duck on braised red cabbage served with thyme lentils and cinnamon jus.

The mouthwatering desserts start from £5 and include espresso chocolate fondant with cardamom anglaise; poached pear with caramel and almond biscuit; lemon tart with blueberries and brandy snap; baked American cheesecake; and several types of cheeses.

For private functions, there’s also a light canape menu, offering a  range of hot and cold nibbles from between £1 and £2.50 each. These include smoked salmon and chive pancake rolls; corn cakes with salsa and sour cream; beetroot and potato rosti with seared beef and horseradish chive cream; roasted aubergine and pine nut tartlets; and both fish and vegetarian filo parcels.

Afternoon teas served on silver three-tiered cake stands are available, proving popular at the monthly Sunday afternoon tango tea dances, and buffet menus can also be arranged.

The Club operates a membership system, which has already attracted more than 1,300 members from the Brighton and Hove area.

For an annual fee of £50, you’re given a swipe card, which entitles each member to free use of the club – although members must pay extra for special acts and live supper club evenings.

The Hanbury Club stages a lively calendar of events, too, with film noir and games on Tuesdays and cabaret acts on Thursdays.
